Project “One Tree Planted for Each Warrior”

Project Initiative

In the year commemorating the centenary of the First World War, the Republic of Serbia Ministry of Justice recognized the opportunity to launch an afforestation in Serbia in broader environmental terms, engaging convicted persons from the Administration for the Execution of Penitentiary Sanctions. The project “One Tree Planted for Each Warrior” provides in the territory of Serbia that for each Serbian patriot killed in WWI, one seedling (hardwoods and conifers) is planted. 1,300,000 pieces of seedlings of forest species will be planted as a symbol and memory on four years of bitter conflict of the Great War. The Ministry of Justice in the process of realization the action, has offered the cooperation to SE “Srbijašume” and the Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade.

Legal Actions

The Government of the Republic of Serbia brought a Conclusion no. 322-11496/2014 at the session held on 15 October 2014, approving the pilot and major Project “One Tree Planted for Each Warrior”. Cooperation Agreement No. 021-02-25/14-03 dated 24 October 2014, on 19 January 2015 was signed by in behalf of:

1. Republic of Serbia Ministry of Justice, Administration for the Execution of Penitentiary Sanctions – Director of the Administration Phd Milan Stevović;

2. SE “Srbijašume” Belgrade – Acting Director Igor Braunović;

3. Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade – Vice-Dean for Finance, Phd Zdravko Popovic.

By signing the Agreement, preconditions were operatively created for the implementation of pilot and major project.
