Based on the Decision of the UNESCO General Conference, 2021 MAB Programme, the International Day for Biosphere Reserves was celebrated on November 3rd.
SE “Srbijašume”, as the manager of the “Golija” Nature Park and “Golija-Studenica” Biosphere Reserve, marked the International Day for Biosphere Reserves by paying a visit to: the exhibition titled “Košanin Era“ at the Cultural Centre in Ivanjica, Košanin’s native village of Čečina, the site “Košanin Lakes” located within the protected area, as well as the Pridvorica Monastery, all under the slogan “Along the Paths of Great Minds of Serbian Science”. On this occasion, both the 150th anniversary of the birth of academician Nedeljko Košanin (1874-1934) and the 90th death anniversary of this giant of science and pioneer of new trends in botany in the Republic of Serbia were also marked.
The event was attended by the PE “Vojvodinašume“, Institute for Nature Protection of Serbia, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments Kraljevo, UNDP, the local government, etc.
As the successor to Josif Pančić, academician Nedeljko Košanin was undoubtedly one of the most prominent Serbian intellectuals in the first half of the 20th century, an internationally recognized botanist, university professor, dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, and director of the Institute of Botany and „Jevremovac“ Botanical Garden of the University of Belgrade. He was also the founder and long-time editor of the scientific journal “Glasnik“ of the above Institute and Botanical Garden, which is currently published under the name Botanica Serbica.
